STM dux case for iPad Air Review

STM dux iPad Air Case Review

Dux?  Weird name for a case huh… Well, A “dux” in Australia refers to the best student in class, the one who scores highest on every exam.  As the name suggests, STM believe they have developed a best-in-class solution with the dux line of protective cases.

The primary features are rugged protection without bulk, clever combinations of materials, and a few “that’s cool” features thrown in for extra credit.  All dux cases employ a clear poly-carbonate shell, so you can actually see your device while the case continues to protect.

An impressive and versatile protective case which isn’t going to break the bank…

The Dux provides best-in-class protection for your iPad Air. Tested to exceed U.S. Department of Defense Standard 810F/G durability tests (26 drops from 4 feet). Patented magnetic closure saves battery life and folds perfectly into both viewing and typing modes.

Tough, reinforced corners protects from inadvertent drops. Unique clear polycarbonate back panel allows for a custom look or asset tagging for schools or businesses. Designed with input from educators and IT professionals, we made sure the Dux can withstand the unique rigors of a classroom or work environment.

About STM Bags:

Founded in 1998 just outside Sydney, Australia our mission was and still remains to come up with a more comfortable, secure and stylish way of transporting your digital gear. Today, STM makes a variety of laptop bags, packs, fitted tablet and phone cases, all designed to make life a bit more worry free.  In early 2016, STM acquired the brand and distribution rights for premium case maker Element Case. You Could Say Bubble Wrap Doesn’t Really Cut It.

STM’s co-founder, Ethan Nyholm struggled to find a bag that both protected his laptop and suited his (read casual) lifestyle. A sea of boring black bags that screamed, “Laptop Here!” was not really helping. The solution of the laptop wrapped in bubble wrap and tucked into a hiking pack resulted in the classic “There’s got to be a better way!” So, he teamed up with his then co-worker, now co-founder, Adina Jacobs to design a better laptop bag. The rest, as they say is history.

You Could Say We’re A Focused Lot.

Our mission is to come up with a more comfortable, secure and stylish means of transporting your digital gear. We sweat the details almost to an absurd level. This level of focus, we hope, makes us very good at what we do. At least that’s what we tell our folks.

You Could Say We’re A Motley Crew.

We get that a lot.  With offices in Sydney, San Diego, London, and Kuala Lumpur, chances are no matter what time zone you live in, someone from STM is always working on the next perfect bag, protective case, or enjoying happy hour.

No Matter What You Say, We Can Take It.

We are always looking for your feedback. Let us know what you’d like in your next bag or case. We’d love to hear from you. Shoot us a line at

I have to say, I’m also a little dubious about claims regarding protective cases, but there’s no denying that actions speaks louder than words:

I’m certainly not going to be trying this myself in a hurry, but it does look pretty conclusive!

The case itself seems to be well made, is appealing to the eye and doesn’t transform your thin slice of cutting edge tech into a flying brick.

The actual “shell” appears to be very strong and durable whilst the flap with magnetic closure locks firmly into place.  We like it!  The quality of the closure might not seem like a big issue, but flappy closures can cause your battery to drain, if the screen is switch on and off numerous times.

So what are the main features:

  • Tested to exceed U.S. Dept. of Defense Standard 810F/G protocols
  • Survives extreme drop test at 6.6 feet or 200 cm
  • Super protective polycarbonate and rubberized TPU bracket for even the most accident prone among us
  • Clear back to customise your device with personal images, scan a tagging barcode or allow your pristine device to shine through
  • Durable and water resistant polyurethane cover to ward off an occasional drip or spill
  • Patented magnetic closure for an easy fold into the perfect typing or viewing position
  • Instant on/off cover wakes and turns the device off saving battery life
  • Designed to fit and protect your iPad Air (of course!)

We do see quite a number of cases for smartphones and tablets and you get a feel for these things from the get go.  Time will tell of course, but first impressions are quite favorable.  Now… don’t be fooled into thinking you can treat your expensive investment any which way you please!  It goes without saying that the term “handle with care” should always be adhered to when using, in this example, an iPad.

Whilst updating Facebook, if your link to the rest of world slips of your lap or maybe takes a tumble from your desk; something like the STM Dux case should provide more than enough protection.

What’s also great about the Dux case is that whilst on the train, working at your desk it’s possible to position your iPad to make browsing that bit easier and present your arms aching due to prolonged use.

This little clip whilst specific to the iPad Air 2 case gives you a good walkaround the item itself:
