Helly Hansen Odin Traverse Jacket Review

Helly Hansen Odin Traverse Jacket Review

In this the third part of the Helly Hansen review saga, we’re in more familiar territory that of the waterproof shell, in the form of the Odin Traverse Jacket.  Is there no end to the array of products Helly Hansen produce? Comes the cry from the back.  Well it would appear not, but is the Odin Traverse Jacket a one dimensional climbing waterproof?  Or does it live up to the mighty name of Odin.

Helly Hansen have been making jackets since 1877, a pedigree which is envied and admired in equal measure.  Admittedly the early incarnations were based around the Oil Skin jacket which no doubt a required the powers of a Demigod just to bear the weight.  That said, those years of experience, innovation and understanding seem to permeate from each and every pore of the Odin Traverse Jacket.  Without wanting to get too misty eyed, this certainly is no one trick pony aimed at a specialist market.  The Odin Traverse Jacket embodies those core Helly Hansen values of Adaptability and Versatility; it’s easy to imagine the Traverse jacket excelling in a whole host of applications.

Not only does the Traverse look great, it’s also a fantastic multi-purpose jacket brimming with technology.  We love it!

The Odin Traverse comes equipped with all the features you’d expect from a jacket of this type:

  • HELLY TECH® PROFESSIONAL
  • Waterproof, windproof and breathable
  • 3 ply fabric construction
  • Fully seam sealed
  • Durable Water Repellency treatment (DWR)
  • YKK Aquaguard water resistant front zip
  • YKK Aquaguard water-resistant zip pockets
  • Venting zips
  • Helmet compatible fully adjustable hood
  • Bottom hem adjustment
  • Adjustable cuffs

The Traverse is classified as an outdoor jacket,  designed for climbing or hiking and although that aptly describes its primary sphere of application, we don’t feel it tells the whole tale.  The Traverse is fully featured waterproof, breathable and windproof protecting you against the elements at altitude.  Helly Hansen have made full use of there super light and hard wearing 3-ply Helly Tech fabric which is functional simplicity at its finest, as well as looking superb!

The traverse also echoes the 4-pocket design seen with the Odin H2Flow, providing high levels of flexibility and functionality.  Whilst these aren’t necessarily suitable for stuffing full of gear they’re ideal for essential items whilst keeping bulk to a minimum.

Available in three colours, Ebony (On Test) Bright Yellow and the peculiarly named “590 Tempting Blue” all of which are subtly accented making choice no easy task.  With a RRP of £230 this is a premium quality jacket offering excellent value for money.

Helly Hansen manufactures utility wear for survival, work and sport; focusing on the needs of professionals, athletes and enthusiasts as their core values.  These values radiate out into their clothing and equipment, just like the Odin H2Flow, the Traverse jacket follows that same well trodden path.

We’ll be testing the Traverse jacket further over the coming months, until then please refer to the “First Impressions” tab for further information or visit the Helly Hansen website for more details:

In Detail

In 1984 when Helly Hansen developed their award winning Hellytech fabric which 2 years later became the corner stone to there 3 layering system, who would have imagined it would still be in use to this day.  Well, the boffins at Helly Hansen I suspect!

Are are very few manufacturers that evoke such strong feelings when you examine or try on their clothing; well Helly Hansen is one such manufacturer.  Whether it’s quality or attention to detail these are aspects which are familiar across their product range.  Black (or ebony in this case) is not a colour you see used that often in premium waterproof shells, which is understandable as it has a tendency to look a little insipid.  Helly Hansen have however, through their use of clever accenting, dressed the Traverse jacket with splashes of bright orange which lift it sufficiently without burning holes in the back of your eyes.

The familar 4-Pocket configuration boasts YKK Aquaguard water resistant zip Napoleon pockets, with a zip kennel

as well as YKK Aquaguard water-resistant zip hand pockets with a substantial storm cover.  These are also able to provide additional levels of venting via an open mesh.

The peak, with the HH symbol emblazoned across it, it semi-stiffened and provide more than adequate cover from the rain.

Whilst this is a breathable jacket, the inclusion of Venting Zips, designed to help equalise the temperature within the jacket, are a clever addition.

Even the most breathable jackets can become clammy during periods of heavy exertion.  They’re easy to operate whilst on the move and highlight the levels of flexibility and application the Traverse provides.  With fully adjustable hem, cuffs you tailor the Traverse jacket to each and every situation with ease.

The YKK Aquaguard water resistant front zip isn’t two way, however for a fitted jacket of this type which is cut a little lower at the front and deeper at the back, this poses no problems whatsoever.

Which brings me on to several little features which make a huge difference.  I have a pet hate of shells which provide nothing on which to hang your pride and joy.  For me this has led to torn or misshapen hoods and yokes due to the lack of a simple hanging loop.  I’m please to say the Traverse jacket offers not only a hanging loop but also a beard guard, which is a really welcome addition!

Having owned, borrowed (but not stolen) more jackets than I care to remember over the years, I can say in all honesty I’ve gelled with the Traverse jacket immediately.  Helly Hansen always surpass my levels of expectation and somehow manage to excel in virtually all areas.

The Odin Traverse Jacket, I’m pleased to say, carry’s on in the same vein.

Not only does the Traverse look great, it’s also a fantastic multi-purpose jacket brimming with technology.  We love it!
