The Verglas is said to be a favourite amongst mountain guides and that is no surprise as fully specified shell built to a high standard, using quality fabrics and components.  The Helly Tech® Professional fabric feels thick and luxuriant whilst remaining quite supply and highlight comfortable.

The Verglas has many of the features we experienced in both the Odin Traverse and the Odin H2 Flow Jackets with added ‘Oomph.”  Essentially if you’re skiing or climbing it’ll withstand considerable knocks and abrasions without being damaged.  The 3 ply fabric and storm sealed zips will help to keep the weather out but there is the addition of a zip out softshell powder skirt which adds to the versatility.

A firm favourite of the Helly Hansen’s Ambassadors, having worn and used the Verglas Jacket for a number of weeks it’s easy to see why.  It’s exceptionally versatility, robust and hard wearing.  Not only does it perform on the slopes and mountains but it looks superb around town.

Rather than excelling in just one area, Helly Hansen appear to adopt the approach of excelling in all…

If you’re in the market a professional quality Mountain or Backcountry Skiing jacket that offers superb functionality as modest price, the Verglas is a great choice.

In 1984 Helly Hansen developed their award winning Hellytech fabric, which 2 years later became the corner stone to there 3 layering system, so it’s certainly no surprise it continues to be improved and used in the majority the jacket range and to great effect… that’s one of things we love about Helly Hansen, they’re constantly improving and evolving.

I have mentioned previously that there are so many manufacturers out there producing a myriad of shell designs utilising different technologies, it becomes difficult for individual brands to rise above the fog.  Helly Hansen do this time and time again by investing time into producing clothing and equipment which excels rather than compromises.  The Verglas jacket, like so many of their range, exudes quality when you examine it closely to the point of almost being over engineered.

Helly Hansen design their clothing and equipment with the professional in mind but, and here’s the clever bit, ensure it’s well within the reach of us the consumer.  So, here’s a little more about this wondrous item of outdoor clothing.

Whilst fit is badged as being “regular”, it doesn’t feel boxy in the slightest and it comfortable and flattering:

The front of the jacket keeps everything together via the the familiar Water resistant YKK® Aquaguard® center front zip:

This is a two-way set-up meaning it’s possible to provide additional venting whilst climbing or indeed whilst you’re seated.  Behind the main zip lies a good quality and slightly stiffened storm guard:

The Verglas boasts an impressive pocket configuration, with Welded YKK® Aquaguard® zip chest pockets, including zip kennels:

As well as YKK® Coil zipped hand pockets, which what we come to expect from Helly Hansen:

Both the chest and hand pockets are of generous proportions and capable of storage an impressive amount of (bulky) gear if required.

The bottom hem has elastic adjustment for added versatile, with easy single handed operation:

Just inside the jacket and to add to it’s already impressive set of credentials,  is the addition of a zip-out snow skirt:

The cuffs are equally well kitted out and are able to cope with lightweight or heavy duty gloves, depending upon the weather.  Being velcro they’re easy to use and don’t slip whilst on the move:

It’s worth mentioning (again!) that the Verglas jacket utilises HELLY TECH® PROFESSIONAL 3-ply fabric, but is unlined.  This is to aid performance and adds to the overall versatility of the Verglas jacket.

It’s also designed so the interior of the jacket is quick drying.  The addition of extra long pits zips is an added bonus in this respect, providing ample ventilation.

Don’t let all this talk of quick drying and added ventilation put you off.  The Verglas is designed to be a workhorse and by workhorse we mean probably a “Shire.”  It’s hugely robust when compared to a standard shell jacket.

As with all Helly Hansen shell jackets of this design it is fully adjustable and helmet compatible, providing excellent levels of protection and flexibility, with one hand adjustment capability to adjust on the fly.

When the jacket is zipped all the way up, there’s even a beard guard for added comfort.  A nice touch for a full-on mountain beastie!

Being a mountain jacket as well as a backcountry skiing jacket, the built RECCO® Reflector comes as no surprise and right amount of reassurance sprinkles for those of us who enjoy winter adventure.

Any clothing or equipment which displays the RECCO® Reflector, which is a self contained and maintenance free device, means in the event of an avalanche rescuers can locate you easier and quicker and with pin point accuracy.  Clearly a potentially life saving addition which underlines the types of activity Helly Hansen have anticipated the wearer to be involved with.

I really have owned, tested, used and abused numerous shell jackets over the last 20 years so being afforded the opportunity to test many Helly Hansen’s excellent range wouldn’t seem the most exciting prospect.  However, we’re continually surprised and impressed in equal measure as to the quality of their range.Helly Hansen Verglas Jacket Review WalkHikeClimb

Rather than excelling in just one area, Helly Hansen appear to adopt the approach of excelling in all.  The Verglas is the sort of jacket you would always reach for in the colder and wetter months whatever you were doing in the outdoors. I wouldn’t think twice about using this jacket in a layering system if I was hiking, climbing, scrambling or skiing. It is built to last but not at the detriment of its striking good looks and brimming with all the tech we’ve come to  know and love.
