HH Womens Verglas Down Insulator Vest
As Winter now appears to be well and truly behind us, no doubt your thoughts are turning to the lighter side of your wardrobe, with that in mind, and thanks to our good friends at Helly Hansen, we’re continuing our journey in their territory with a look at the Women’s Verglas Down Insulator Vest. As our testers have been so smitten with Helly Hansen, yet again we’re reviewing items from their excellent women’s clothing range.
We been really fortunate to have tested all manner of Helly Hansen items and been hugely impressed with the level of quality. The fact Helly Hansen has been making clothing – and in particularly jackets – since 1877, it shouldn’t come as a surprise really.
Helly Hansen are synonymous with the sea but they have equally as much experience in the mountains and have been kitting out professionals in their native Scandinavia for years. A quick glance at our review resume will testify to the range and depth Helly Hansen produce for outdoor and mountain activities.
The Verglas Down Insulator Vest is classified by Helly Hansen, in there usual understated way, as an Active, slim design, down insulator vest. “Verglas” couldn’t be a more apt name, meaning “thin layer of ice” or “frozen rain” which conjurers up images of battling the elements; the Verglas is obviously something that means business. Oh, and it’s got these great stretchy side panels too!
A glance at its specification would support that assumption with 700+ fill European goose down aligned to a Pertex Microlight face fabric.
The vest benefits from a form fitting cut which again our testers preferred to a more regular or boxy fit, improving the insulaton properties as well as being a more pleasing fit. Added to this single handed adjustment with bottom hem and the turtle neck collar with full length zip, there’s no shortage of tailoring to suit conditions. There is also a slightly scaloped back which, without putting too fine a point on it, covers ‘ya bum!
You also get nice soft lycra piping around the shoulders which help to keep the elements out, but maintain a good level of comfort and minimise pinching.
This is what makes garments such as the Verglas such great value for money; multi-purpose, quality, versatility…
The jacket comes in either Black or Bordeaux, which we’re testing here. The vest is priced at around the £130 mark which is competitive when compared to other manufactures offerings in a similar bracket.
Helly Hansen manufacture utility wear for survival, work and sport; focusing on the needs of professionals, athletes and enthusiasts as their core values. These values radiate out into their clothing and equipment, the Verglas Down Insulator Vest being a shining example.
For more detail please refer to the “First Impressions” tab or visit the Helly Hansen website for further information:
The Helly Hansen Down Insulator is a lightweight vest constructed from Pertex Lightweight face fabric and quality European 700+ fill goose down. As such this can be worn as a standalone garment or as a mid-layer / part of your layer system. The lighter construction means the Verglas compresses down into the smallest of spaces and won’t compromise pack weight. Thanks to it’s cut and pleasing, quality finish you also won’t look like you’ve just stepped off Everest should you also decided to wear it around town.
We never get tired of testing Helly Hansen gear as every item seems to have it’s own unique qualities and niche. There’s almost a childlike excitement unpacking each and every item and the Verglas is no exception; releasing the jacket from it’s papery slumber gifts the wearer with all manner of sensory overload. Touch, sight, sound and smell even are all rewarded in equal measure… to say we’re clothing voyeurs is perhaps an understatement.
They say the proof of the pudding is in the eating, well… suffice to say anything with “Helly Hansen” written on the side of it generally creates somewhat of a free for all a WalkHikeClimb.
From the front and the rear the tailored fit is there for all to see with its diagonal baffles giving it a slimmer more fitted look:
The addition of the stretchy side panels is a great idea, providing improved freedom of movement as well as reducing unecessary bulk.
The bottom hem adjustments – single handed – means you can alter the vest to suit the conditions, thereby increasing or decreasing the insulation properties on the move.
The soft Snowstop Lycra around the shoulders fits perfectly with no tightness or discomfort beyond keeping the elements out:
Discreet fleece lined side pockets are perfect for warming bear hands or keeping small items in and are tailored perfectly into the design and lines of the jacket:
The full length (YKK) Zipper provides adaquate protection from the elements, such as spindrift, and is further enhanced by the inner storm flap
The contrasted inner lining is also a great little touch and creates a sense of luxury.
Another great addition to the Verglas Insulator range, Helly Hansen’s Active, slim design, down insulator vest featuring high quality European Goose down and Pertex microlight fabrics.
When testing the Verglas Down Insulator Vest, both in everyday use and trekking, our testers were pleased to report it performed remarkably well. So much so, is hasn’t been seen again since leaving the office.
It is as light as a feather so you hardley even notice you’re wearing or if necessary can be stuffed snug inside your backpack until called upon. As with all Helly Hansen products you cannot help but be impressed with the detail and feel of it.
With just two colours available, choosing the right one for you should be just that little bit easier. Benefiting from being lighter weight, yet constructed with quality components, increases the levels of versatility. So whether you’re taking a trip down to the shops, walking the dog or walking up the side of a mountain it can be adapted to suit all and every situation.
This is what makes garments such as the Verglas such great value for money; multi-purpose, quality, versatility.
