Lifeproof iPhone4S Case Review
Prior to receiving the Lifeproof iPhone4S case it’s fair to say we weren’t exactly bursting with excitement, after all it’s a case… for your iPhone. Well, how wrong could we have been! We’re really looking forward to putting the Lifeproof iPhone4S case through it’s paces; wonder if it can hold it’s breath longer than we can?
Lifeproof produce cases for the primary or premium devices available on the market today, including Apple iPad’s, iPhones and iPods as well the Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4. When you consider how valuable an item smartphones, tablets and iPods are, financially as well personally, investing in a case of some kind is a given really; especially if you take your device out in the wilds, cycling or even by the pool.
If you read the specification of the Lifeproof cases you’d be forgiven for thinking these unassuming looking objects are military grade weapons for Navy Seals, such is the dazzling array of features and protection. Therein lies their strength; equally at home in a suit pocket or handbag as it is underwater or out in the wilds.
Talking of Military grade, the Liferpoof case is designed to some rather exacting standards covering environmental conditions and ingress protection. Don’t be fooled by the candy colours or elegant looks, this really is a serious piece of kit.
Lifeproof provide seven levels of protection
CrystalClear AR-coated optical-glass lens
Nonstick cover never collects dirt or lint
Waterproof seals on all ports and openings
Polycarbonate frame absorbs impacts
Waterproof ports on all microphones and speakers
Scratch-resistant and waterproof screen protector
Shock-absorbing elastomeric inner-layer
Which together encompass the “four proofs” as they call it
It’s not often you can sum up something with a single word, but we think this case is awesome. We’ll post a long-term review once we’ve really put this thing through it’s paces, until then, take a look at the “First Impressions” tab for further details.
It’s only when you get your hands on a product like a Lifeproof case you realise the folly of having turned yourself over the darkside of cheap imitations. As we’ve already discussed, when you consider the actual value of these lifestyle devices we’re all so very dependent upon, there’s no good reason not to invest relatively little in something that will protect your prized possession with the same ferocity as lioness would protect her cubs.
As we’ve already seen the Lifeproof cases are built and designed to very exacting standards not only this, they look really cool! My past experience has taught me if you want protection the trade off is something that turns your phone from a slick lifestyle device into a mobile brick.
The Lifeproof cases take everyday hazards in their stride without bating an eyelid, in fact, as they’re fully IP-68 compliant and meet Military Specifications MIL-STD-810F-516.5, Lifeproof cases tread where other fear. This is great for me as I’m constantly dropping my phone, getting it wet, muddy and generally using and abusing it. Now I can simply rinse it off under tap and away I go!
The Lifeproof also Includes General User Headphone Adaptor and Keeper for headphone jack cover, which seals snug against the body of the case. You also have the ability to swim and take underwater (2 meters/6.6ft depth) picture or video for up to 30 minutes.
Unlike a great number of other cases available on the mark today, the Lifeproof really is ultra-slim and adds only 1/16” (1.5mm) when measured from the center of the phone
Due the fact the case has double AR-coated optical glass lenses this provide unprecedented crystal-clear photo and video quality while underwater…yes underwater camera!

Military Standard 810F-516 — MIL STD 810F is the standard that addresses a broad range of environmental conditions, with MIL STD 810F-516 being the section of the standard that is specific to functional drop.
This standard requires that the item can physically and functionally withstand the relatively infrequent, non-repetitive shocks encountered in handling, transportation, and service environments. This may include an assessment of the overall material system integrity for safety purposes in any one or all of the handling, transportation, and service environments.
IP-68 — IEL 60529 is the standard for Ingress Protection from water and dust for enclosures. IP-68 is the most rigorous classification in this specification.
The first characteristic number describes protection from solid foreign objects. An enclosure with a characteristic number of 6 can withstand exposure to circulating talcum powder for 8 hours with no dust ingress after that period.
The second characteristic number describes protection against water. An enclosure with a characteristic number of 8 exceeds all other water protection levels and is specified by the manufacturer.
