Montane Fusion Alpha Jacket Review
The Montane Fusion Alpha Jacket Review:
New jackets dropping through the door are always sure to get me excited. There was a difference this time, a new style of jacket no less, insulated, windproof and breathable…
I am a sucker when it comes to jackets and I do tend to wear softshell jackets on a daily basis. I feel like I have had every brand there is at some point and can find good and bad things about all. I never get bored of the next incarnation though and always have that excitement about what’s next…I guess that is what the marketing folk at the different brands want you to do really. So when the new Montane Alpha Fusion jacket came to visit I was rather excited to see what it was all about, I mean a jacket that encompasses all the warmth of an insulation layer with the breathability and wind proof effects of a softshell….how does that even work!
Lightweight HYPERVENT lining is used behind the POLARTEC® Alpha core body areas to ensure optimum breathability. …
Taking a glance at Montane’s website at how they describe it they say “Developed using thermal imaging data produced during activities in cold, wet conditions, the Fusion Alpha Jacket sets the standard for critical attention to detail. With a full set of technical features aimed at alpinists and using a combination of the highest performing fabrics available (POLARTEC® Alpha, PERTEX® Quantum CS-10 and POLARTEC® Power Grid™), the Fusion Alpha offers insulation, wind protection and breathability in one hit.. “. I love the idea of it being 3 jackets in one but is it really that good or is it just a gimmick to get one over the competition.
I have to confess when the jacket arrived my first thought was how can something so light provide any level of insulation and warmth. Obviously you wouldn’t wear it by itself in minus 16 during the depth of winter but I would certainly expect to use it on the summits during the spring and summer months where the temperature does dip. The jacket offers core body panelling which is encased with PERTEX® Quantum CS-10; a supremely lightweight yet tough nylon rip-stop fabric, which gives windproof protection and the benefit of light rain resistance through a Durable Water Repellency.
The Alpha fusion uses 80g/m2 POLARTEC® Alpha synthetic insulation in the core body is fast drying, lightweight and also regulates internal temperatures.
Lightweight HYPERVENT lining is used behind the POLARTEC® Alpha core body areas to ensure optimum breathability. This really does work out in the mountains, you really feel the benefit the moment you put the jacket on and it puts its hand up to the wind and wraps its warm embrace around you.
The Alpha Fusion Jacket bridges that gap between insulation, windproof and breathability …
Technical tailoring around the arms to prevent arm lift raising the lower hem whilst reaching high, so for those situations where your scrambling up rocks it really comes into it own. The jacket also has POLARTEC® Power Grid™ stretch hood with PERTEX® Quantum CS-10 ear overlay, stretch bound face aperture, designed to fit under or over a climbing helmet as well all aid the comfort factor.
There is the usual full length two way YKK reverse coil front zip which allows easy access to climbing or rucksack harness. There is also an internal storm flap behind centre front zip together with press stud to secure hem and prevent further weather entry and it has a nice Microfleece lined beard guard for added comfort factor. There is a large YKK reverse coil zipped chest pocket that has an ergonomic lightweight zip pullers which make use easier when wearing gloves.
The stretch cuffs with build in thumb loop are really useful when stretching up boulders and reduce the ride factor of the sleeves which I always find frustrating. The Adjustable hem with cinchable drawcord is also worth a mention as it gives further opportunity to tailor the fit of the jacket. There is also a nice Montane hang loop externally on the rear.
The mustard colour Zips really do match well with the grey (or Shadow) colour of this particular jacket. More colours are available but this one really does sing I have to say…
This really does shout of Montane’s desire to innovate always looking for gaps in the market for new products. They like to gamble on there new designs and its paid of in a big way with the Alpha Fusion Jacket…I am fan for sure…

I do find as I mentioned before I can get a little over excited with jackets. This Alpha Fusion jacket is something a little bit different in my opinion, I mean different in a positive way as well. Montane have managed to make a robust super lightweight insulated windproof breathable jacket, even saying that out loud is hard let alone developing it. Not only will it act as a go to jacket in the spring and summer months I can see myself adding this to my pack list for winter as well to act as part of my layering system when the weather starts hitting the minus’s. The jacket packs up so small it will be easy to chuck it in your back pack and when needed it wont let you down.
If I was trying to pick some faults with the jacket it would be the price point maybe at £180 retail. Although even that isn’t to bad when compared to light weight insulated jackets or even high end softshells. Its also worth mentioning I have been wearing this jacket for everyday use. The fitted look and light weight nature mean its just as comfortable doing the school run, trips to the shops as being up high in the mountains…I do like to get lots of wear out of my gear so that is a bonus also. It will be interesting to see how the jacket fairs on vaious trips to Wales, Lake District and the Pyrenees over the coming the months but so far I have been super impressed its ability…Thanks Montane…
