MSR Whisperlite International Combo Stove Review

MSR Whisperlite Universal Combo

The MSR Whisperlite is synonymous with backpacking or expedition stoves and a name that resonates throughout the outdoor community; representing quality, efficiency and robustness.

I first purchased a “Whisperlite” pre-milenium and was immediately bowled over by it’s speed and efficiency; previous to this having been a long-term user of the faithful Trangia set.  After years and use and abuse it’s still functioning perfectly to this day, even though I’ve not been as fastidious as I should as far as servicing is concerned.  The Landrover of the stove world perhaps?

For me the MSR Whisperlite has no equal…

MSR offer a range of stoves to suit all needs and requirements, however the Whisperlite remains one of their most versatile and following on from 20years of use in the field and customer feedback has evolved into the product you see today.

There was very little wrong with the original Whisperlite, however it’s great to see that the little niggles have all been ironed out and what we see today is a truly accomplished product.

About (MSR) Mountain Safety Research
In 1969, Seattle engineer and lifelong mountaineer Larry Penberthy formed Mountain Safety Research as a one-man crusade dedicated to improving the safety of climbing equipment.

The fuel behind Larry’s passionate fire was a simple belief that still drives our team today:

The idea that better, safer, more reliable equipment is the key to unlocking greater adventures.

From that notion evolved a pioneering outdoor company whose innovations have revolutionized the way people experience the outdoors worldwide. Today, we’re a close-knit team still obsessed with designing the most reliable, high-performance gear possible, using our knowledge of engineering and science to find better solutions to the challenges of the mountains. At MSR, we are engineers, tinkers and passionate outdoor users–each with strong perspectives on how a product should work based on our own experiences in the wild places we love. But collectively, we believe that innovative solutions are bred by challenging convention, and that functionality, simplicity and reliability are the governing elements of enduring design.

Today, many MSR products are still hand-built on manufacturing lines just a floor below where we concept them. And we’re still driven to engineer gear for those who believe a trusted companion can be as simple as a 20-year-old stove that burns strong on family backpacking trips, to a water filter that provides the safe hydration needed to fuel the greatest expeditions into the farthest reaches of the globe.

The system is simplicity itself, which is perhaps the key to its ongoing success; with an ability to run on white gas, kerosene and even unleaded petrol, it’s unlikely you’ll be in a situation whereby you’re unable to rustle up a nice cuppa!

As the heart of the system is the self-cleaning shaker jet

which delivers the liquid from the the main fuel bottle

Pressure the bottle with the pump, fill the ignition reservoir, light and watch the liquid turn from liquid to gas and the flame change from dancing yellow to roaring blue.  Not subtle but it’ll boil a pint of water in no time.

With stainless steal legs, a large stuff sac and a substantial fuel bottle the MSR Whipserlite International Combo is a phenomenal piece of kit

During a recent trip to Scandinavia, the MSR Whiperlite was my every-ready companion for boiling, cooking and scaring the Reindeer with the mighty roar!  It perhaps not as refined as the Dragonfly which has improved precision, but if you want something that boils water quickly and efficiently with little fuss, then look no further.

Having a reliable compact stove when you’re backpacking is essential, especially when the weather takes a turn for the worst.  Hot drinks and food can make a huge difference when you’re wet and tired, so much so I tend to carry one of these things everywhere I go.

If I were in a position whereby I could choose only one stove for all my treks and expeditions, it would be likely I’d opt for the Whisperlite.  Why is that I hear you cry? Well, I’ve yet to suffer any issues with my original Whisperlite with the exception of leaking O-Rings which were quickly rectified through the purchase of their maintenance kit.  The Whisperlite is compact, easy to use, robust and when you really need it can boil water or heat food quicker than you’d expect.

If it were a vehicle, the MSR Whisperlite would be a LandRover Defender; use it, abuse it and you won’t be let down.

The box set to use by our friends at Cotswoldoutdoor comes with a fuel pump, fuel bottle, heat reflector and wind shield.  The Stove or burner itself, an instruction manual and basic maintenance kit.

In addition to this you get a stuff-sac that holds all of the above nicely.  I remember the original ones included a stuff-sac which was more than a tight squeeze for hold all of the above.

The stove or burner is made from quality stainless steel components where required and boasts a broad footprint which is more than capable of supporting a large cooking pot

The legs, when not in use, fold neatly together making packing and transportation a simply affair.

The supplied fuel bottle is of a generous size, approximately 600ml, which will last a considerable amount of time.

The fuel pump which is essential for pressurising the system, thereby allowing fuel to flow into the burner is made of good quality plastic.  At first I was wary of it’s construction, however in all the years of ownership and use of my original Whisperlite I’ve yet to experience any problems.

The pump screws into the fuel bottle

and connects to the burner itself via a fuel-line and securing clip

There’s no ability to regulate the flame, unlike the Dragonfly for example, it’s pretty much on or off; however that’s it’s sole purpose in life.  To heat or boil as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The fuel tap is located on the pump itself.

To start the stove, you simply fill the fuel resevoir or cup with a small amount of fuel, light and wait for the flame to super-head the liquid to a gas.

The flame initial burns yellow, but quickly changes to the hotter and more efficient blue once the heating element is up to temperature.

The basic maintence kit and addition shaker jet provide everything you’ll need, initially, to keep you going in the field.  They even supply a spare O-Ring just in case.

Talking of maintenence, it couldn’t be easier:

Maintenance of the pump assembly is also a stress free affair:

We love this stove, for it’s simplicity, ease of operation but perhaps most of all the fact it’s tried and tested.  It’s certainly never let me down!

There’s very little criticism you can direct at the MSR Whisperlite as it’s without doubt the benchmark against which all other stoves are measured.  If you’re in the market for a fast and reliable stove to boil water or heat food then your quest is over.  If you’re after something which offers a little more precision in terms of flame adjustment, I’d suggest you take a look at the MSR Dragonfly.  For me it’s quite simply, I’m never going to produce a gourmet meal on a single pot stove and I want something that will operate quickly and efficiently, both at sea level as well as up in the clouds.

For me the MSR Whisperlite has no equal.
